This location holds great historical value as it represents the place where the first tram station was built in 1892, being the first facility for accommodation and maintenance of public transport vehicles not only in Belgrade but in the whole country, which is why it is primary called a “tram depot”. Its construction enabled the opening of the first tram line Kalemegdan-Slavija on October 14 1892. At the time vehicles were transported as horse-drawn vehicles and were only present in New York, Paris, London and Berlin before Belgrade. Not only that this was the longest and oldest operating street in Belgrade, but because of high traffic and popularity in 1996 “depot” was fully renovated and converted into a famous shopping district that resembled an open market but with a roof and became one of the trademarks of the city.
